The 4th Create entry as a graphic designer in Barcelona.

Create is a series of posts we felt morally obliged to publish so that anyone who wanted to could have all the information they need to train as graphic designers in Barcelona.

This time we’re going to talk about Bau, La Bau.

What is Bau, Barcelona’s University Design Centre?

Bau, also known as a University Design Centre in Barcelona, is a school founded in 1989 in the city of Barcelona, where it is based.

It was founded on the drive of a group of graphic design professionals with a firm calling for teaching and pedagogy; out of that desire came a school of higher education in Design.

Innovative, multidisciplinary and modern in character, it joined what was at the time the more traditional and academic range of courses in Barcelona.

In 2003 it made a bet on the future and moved to Poblenou, the Catalan capital’s innovation and design district, 22@.

Bau restored a 6,000 m2 industrial site, fitting out the various dedicated spaces for teaching.

In 2009, within the framework of the European Higher Education Area, it strengthened its offering and became affiliated with the University of Vic in Catalonia.

Teaching model

The teaching model at Bau and among its staff is about training contemporary graphic designers with a critical mind, ready for the shifting market they’ll encounter now and in the future.

Working groups are small so the teaching can be highly personalised and teamwork encouraged.

Another very interesting point is the multilingual approach in a professional context, placing particular importance on command of English for later use in the industry, so students can be more competitive in the job market.

Bau and the value it places on design

At Bau they place enormous importance on the value of design, since they themselves consider design to be the process that precedes the search for a solution in any field.

So it’s the purest description of the maker: the graphic designer is a maker.

Through graphic design we can improve our own lives or other people’s, and applied to the market that’s a very important thing for staying competitive.

The market is a great devourer of products; like a tunnel borer it demands the creation, use and destruction of all kinds of products so they can be renewed, and we are the designers and makers who feed that infinite hunger.

What will I become by studying at Bau?

Depending on the course and on how much we make of it, Bau will give us the training we need to become graphic design professionals.

Makers capable of conjuring the best solution out of nothing, makers of worlds.

We’ll build up our creativity so we can use it to create objects, create messages, create spaces and so on.

In practice we’ll be able to handle logo design for companies, the branding design for a business, advertising campaigns and more.

What courses are there at Bau?

If I still haven’t sparked your curiosity, let me tell you about the courses on offer.

Its main strands are:

  • Degree in Design
  • Master’s degrees and Postgraduate courses
  • Diploma in Graphic Design «Bau Evening»

Design Degree

Bau’s degree sits within the Arts and Humanities branch, so you need the necessary qualifications to enter university. That said, we can also get in if we’re over 45, or over 40 with experience in the field of graphic design, logo design and so on.

It runs for a total of 4 academic years, with a morning timetable and an afternoon one.

It also includes work placements at external companies and a final degree project.

With all that to get through, by the end we’ll be able, as graphic designers and makers, to develop our creativity as a language, we’ll have the knowledge we need to shape the evolution of design, and we’ll have mastered the specific techniques for working as a graphic designer.
