This time in Individuals #9 I’m going to tell you about a photographer: Tony Futura.
An artist worth giving a chance to see whether he becomes a reference point for makers and graphic design.
Who is Tony Futura?
Behind the name Tony Futura is a 29-year-old Berlin artist, someone with no interest in leaving us indifferent to his work or in holding back from criticising today’s society. With Tony Futura there’s something for everyone: pop culture, the political system, cinema, social media and anything else that crosses his path.
His work
Tony Futura’s work sits within the surrealist photographic genre; his way of working is very clear: take any contemporary image and build montages from it in order to level criticism at whatever sector he chooses.
The criticism
His work has been described as bold and transgressive; there are also plenty of people who feel his work has too much sexual content and makes the viewer uncomfortable.
My take
Personally I think it’s precisely because of the character of his work and his intent that it stirs all those feelings in us, and that’s what makes this artist so interesting.
I even think it isn’t such a big deal and that he could quite easily push things further, harder and with the gloves off; the artist is probably holding back a little so we’re able to take his work in without rejecting it outright.
